2. Alabama 6-0 (1st)

3. Oklahoma 5-0 (6th)

4. Clemson 6-0 (3rd)

8. Illinois 6-0 (9th)

9. Wisconsin 5-0 (8th)

10. Kansas State 5-0 (NR)

Out: Texas (10th).

Explanation: LSU and Alabama clearly have the top 2 résumés, and they traded spots this week, with Bama falling to #2, and LSU taken their place in the top spot. Texas (formerly #10) was the only team to fall out of these rankings this week, replaced by KSU at #10. Oklahoma made the biggest climb, jumping up 3 spots to #3. You may notice that there are still no non-undefeated teams in this top 10, despite the presence of more than a few fairly weak schedules among the undefeated ranks. This is because most of the 1-loss teams have also played weak schedules. For now, there just isn’t a non-undefeated team out there with a good enough résumé to even be considered for these rankings.

1. LSU: 6-0 (won vs. Florida, 41-11). LSU blew out Florida to move to 6-0 on Saturday and they climbed up a spot to #1 these rankings. The Bayou Bengals are 5-0 against FBS teams and 2-0 on the road. They also have a win on a neutral field. They have 4 quality wins: vs. Oregon (at Arlington), at Mississippi State, at West Virginia, and vs. Florida. Their average margin of victory is 26.0 points and they’ve won all 6 games by at least 13 points.

2. Alabama: 6-0 (won vs. Vanderbilt, 34-0). Bama shutout Vandy last weekend but they end up moving down a spot to #2 this week. Bama is 6-0 against FBS teams and 2-0 on the road. They have 3 quality wins: at Penn State, vs. Arkansas, and at Florida. The Tide have won all 6 games by at least 16 points and their average margin of victory is 30.7 points.

3. Oklahoma: 5-0 (won vs. Texas, 30-29 [Dallas]). Oklahoma makes a big leap this week following their destruction of Texas, climbing 3 spots to #3. The Sooners are 5-0 against FBS teams and 1-0 on the road (they also have a win on a neutral field). They have 4 quality wins: vs. Tulsa, at Florida State, vs. Missouri, and vs. Texas (at Dallas). They’ve won each game by at least 10 points and their average margin of victory is 29.4 points.

4. Clemson: 6-0 (won vs. Boston College, 36-14). Clemson drops a spot to #4 this week. They are 5-0 against FBS teams and 1-0 on the road. The Tigers have 3 quality wins: vs. Auburn, vs. Florida State, and at Virginia Tech. Their average margin of victory is 15.5 points.

5. Boise State: 5-0 (won at Fresno State, 57-7). The Broncos move down a spot to #5 in this week’s edition. They are 5-0 against FBS teams and 2-0 on the road (also have a win on a neutral field). The Broncos have 4 quality wins: vs. Georgia (at Atlanta), at Toledo, vs. Tulsa, and vs. Nevada. They have won each game this season by at least 14 points and their average margin of victory is 25.8 points.

6. Oklahoma State: 5-0 (won vs. Kansas, 70-28). Oklahoma State falls back a spot to #6. They are 5-0 against FBS teams and 2-0 on the road. The Cowboys have 2 quality wins: at Tulsa and vs. Texas A&M. They have an average margin of victory of 23.8 points.

7. Michigan: 6-0 (won at Northwestern, 42-24). Michigan stays in place this week at #7. The Wolverines are 6-0 against FBS teams and 1-0 on the road. They have 4 quality wins: vs. Western Michigan, vs. Notre Dame, vs. San Diego State, and at Northwestern. Michigan’s average margin of victory is 25.5 points.

8. Illinois: 6-0 (won at Indiana, 41-20). Illinois moves up a spot to #8. They are 5-0 against FBS teams and 1-0 on the road. Illinois has 3 quality wins: vs. Arizona State, vs. Western Michigan, and vs. Northwestern. Their average margin of victory is 16.9 points.

9. Wisconsin: 5-0 (Idle). The Badgers move down a spot to #9. They are 4-0 against FBS teams. They have a win on a neutral field but have yet to play a true road game. Wisconsin has 1 quality win: vs. Nebraska. They have won all 5 of their games by at least 31 points. Their average margin of victory is a ridiculous 38.2 points.

10. Kansas State: 5-0 (won vs. Missouri, 24-17). KSU jumps into the rankings at #10 this week. Whoda thunk it, as they used to say. The Wildcats are 4-0 against FBS teams and 1-0 on the road. They have 2 quality wins: vs. Baylor and vs. Missouri. Kansas State’s average margin of victory is 10.4. I hesitated when putting KSU at #10 because they opened the season with a 10-7 victory over FCS Eastern Kentucky at home. However, none of the other contenders (Houston, Georgia Tech, Stanford) have even 1 quality win this season, so I went with KSU.

Teams Falling Out of the Rankings

Texas: 4-1 (Lost vs. Oklahoma, 17-55 [Dallas]). Texas got slaughtered by Oklahoma last Saturday and they fall out of the rankings from #10 this week. As I stated earlier, there are no non-undefeated teams with good enough résumés to be in the rankings at this point.
