The College Basketball Blog: 2008-2009 Predictions

The new college basketball season is upon us and I’ve just finished some hastily prepared predictions for this season. These days college basketball is easily the most difficult sport to predict because of the quick turnover. This season is especially hard to predict because so many impact players are gone and because this year there aren’t even a lot of highly touted freshman coming in. Last year there were a number of proven teams that had most of their squad coming back but this year there are really only a few teams in that position. Also, last season there were a ton of incoming freshman that everybody new were going to be successful, but that is not at all the case this year. As a result of all of this uncertainty, I’m not even going to attempt to do Power Rankings until the start of conference play.

Anyway, here are my predictions. I predicted the standings for most of the major conferences and a few mid-major conferences that I find interesting. I predicted the regular season champion of all 31 conferences. I always assume that the regular season conference champ will win the conference tournament because that makes it easier to predict the field of 65. So, I predicted the 31 automatic bids and the 34 at-large bids. I’ve also predicted the four #1 seeds, the Sweet 16, the Elite 8, the Final Four, the Finals, and the National Champion. And I’ve predicted some awards.
