Season Résumé Rankings after Week 5

1. Alabama 5-0 (1st)
2. LSU 5-0 (3rd)
3. Oklahoma 5-0 (5th)
4. Auburn 5-0 (2nd)
5. Oregon 5-0 (6th)
6. TCU 5-0 (4th)
7. Michigan State 5-0 (NR)
8. Michigan 5-0 (NR)
9. Ohio State 5-0 (8th)
10. Northwestern 5-0 (NR)

Out: Utah (7th); Stanford (9th); Florida (10th).

Explanation: The new system I’m using to do these rankings is certainly making the task easier, but it may also be delaying the point that these rankings become meaningful. This week I only looked at teams that were 5-0. Then I looked at FBS teams and BCS conference teams on the schedule. I also considered the perceived strength the teams on the schedule, whether it was a home/road/or neutral site game, and the score of the game. Florida and Stanford obviously had to fall out because they both lost. Utah didn’t play last week so they also fell out of the rankings. My hardest decision this week was where to put to LSU. On the one hand, they came about as close to losing as possible this weekend without actually doing it. On the other hand, they are one of only 5 times in the country who have beaten 5 FBS teams, and they are the only team in the country that has beaten 5 teams from BCS conferences. I’m not fretting too much about these rankings right now because there is so much football still to play. Again I will make the promise that these rankings will become more relevant at some point this season.
