2012-2013
NFL Playoff Team Rankings
This is something I did
for the first time last year. I rank the 12 playoff teams in a number of key
categories and then combine the numbers to come up with an overall team ranking
heading into the playoffs. It’s not very scientific but I think it’s fun.
This year I have
changed the categories slightly and added a couple new ones. There are 8 categories
in total: Quarterback; Running Backs; Receivers/Tight Ends; Offensive Line;
Special Teams; Defense; Head Coach; and General.
The “General” category
is the only one that isn’t self explanatory. For that category, I simply rank
the 12 teams based on what I think their overall chances of winning the Super
Bowl are.
I come up with the
rankings for Quarterback, Running Backs, Receivers/Tight Ends, Defense, Head
Coach, and General all on my own. For Offensive Line and Special Teams I use
the rankings done by Football Outsiders.
For defense, I rank the
teams in total defense, scoring defense, sacks, takeaways, and red zone
defense. I then combine those numbers to come up with the overall defense
ranking.
For offensive line, I
take Football Outsiders running and pass protecting rankings and combine them
to come up with an overall OL ranking.
For special teams, I
use the version of Football Outsiders special teams rankings that aren’t
adjusted for weather and altitude.
There were a few ties
among the overall rankings and I used my “General” rankings as the tie-breaker.
So here are the new and
improved playoff team rankings for 2012-2013.
