2012 NCAA Play-In Games
Sorry, folks. I know last year I made a big deal about not allowing the NCAA to dictate whether or not I pick all of the games in the tournament, but I’m gonna have to go ahead and separate the play-in games from the rest of the field. I apologize to all of the teams involved, especially those who lose on Tuesday and Wednesday and never get to figure into anyone’s bracket.
If VCU taught us anything it is this: YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO IS IN THE FIELD OF 64 BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR PICKS. In case you don’t remember (or never knew), I picked USC to beat VCU in one of the play-in games last year. So, yeah, VCU’s run to the Final Four didn’t do a lot of positive things for my bracket.
Regardless, it’s simply not enough time from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening for me to make all of my picks anyway. Hell, even if I had everything picked and my blog entry written I still wouldn’t be able to post it because I’ve got to figure out how to deal with this Fab Melo business. So I’ve got to give my picks for the play-in games now. It’s bullshit but what can you do.
In case you care, here’s my thinking on my play-in game picks. It’s real scientific.
Western Kentucky’s been in the tourney before and won; they’re hot; and they aren’t from the SWAC.
Iona’s entry into the tourney drew the most criticism from the talking heads, just like VCU last year. Plus, I’m sick and fucking tired of BYU and their ridiculous “we don’t play on Sunday” religious crap that everyone lets them get away with.
Lamar is coached by the General’s kid and his team has been on a run ever since he called them all worthless.
And Cal was actually a decent team this year despite playing in the Pac-12, which was worse this season in basketball than the Big East has ever been in football by a mile. And South Florida…well I still can’t believe they’re any good. So here goes.
#16 Western Kentucky over #16 Mississippi Valley State
#14 Iona over #14 BYU
#16 Lamar over #16 Vermont
#12 California over #12 South Florida
